Cabin Meadows Restoration and Education Project

SRWC worked with the Klamath National Forest and North Rivers Construction to remove two failed culverts in tributaries to the East Fork Scott River. Both culverts, in Rock Fence Creek and Cabin Meadows Creek, were undersized, so during high flow events (such as spring run-off), the creek flowed over the road, damaging the road and carrying sediment downstream to the East Fork Scott River.

The road across the Rock Fence Creek crossing is no longer used, so the excess material was removed and the stream bank and channel shaped to match the adjacent stream channel. A rock berm was rebuilt to prevent vehicle access to the closed road.

The culvert at the Cabin Meadows Creek crossing was replaced by an armored ford, shaped to match the adjoining stream, and boulders were situated to prevent use of an unofficial crossing downstream.

Two educational kiosks will be installed in 2024 focussed on meadow ecosystems and restoration activities in the two watersheds.

The culvert removal is part of a larger effort to restore hydrology and meadows in these two watersheds, combining holistic restoration planning for the two watersheds and some initial treatments of conifers encroaching in the meadows and construction of low-tech instream structures (using the removed conifers!) to slow, spread, and sink the water.
