2024 stands as a landmark year for the Klamath Basin, highlighted by the successful completion of the world’s largest dam removal project. Similarly, for the Scott River watershed, SRWC added to this historic moment with the acquisition of the Sugar Creek Ranch.
For over a decade, the Scott River Watershed Council (SRWC) has worked alongside private landowners, partners, researchers, and funders to revitalize the Scott River fisheries, with Sugar Creek Ranch playing a key role. The acquisition in 2024 is an achievement that reflects a collective commitment to conservation and restoration.
The 112-acre Sugar Creek Ranch encompasses 12 acres of cold-water ponds that can be hydraulically connected to the Scott River, offering significant rearing habitat for juvenile coho salmon.
A heartfelt thank you to the Kalpin Family for entrusting this land to conservation, ensuring its protection in perpetuity. We extend our gratitude to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife for their invaluable support, and to Dr. Michael Pollock for his vision and dedication to restoration at this treasured site.
In February 2025, SRWC also acquired Beaver Haven which is an 11-acre property that is the home of salmonids, beaver and countless other species. We would like to express our deepest appreciation to Bettina Von Hagen for making this happen.
May this moment inspire a unified community effort to fully restore the Scott River fisheries for generations to come.
